Toronto Needs Affordable Child Care Now
Tell Politicians to Make it Happen
We have the most expensive child care in Canada and right now we have a chance to change that, making it just $10/day. But Doug Ford won’t sign the deal with the Federal Government. If he won’t sign it, then Mayor Tory should.
Tell Mayor Tory and Doug Ford to sign the $10/day child care deal now.
Toronto has an opportunity to have $10/day child care
The federal government is signing deals with the provinces to make $10/day child care a reality for families. Nine provinces and territories have signed onto the deal so far but Ford has yet to sign. Child care advocates like the Toronto Community for Better Child Care have been calling for more affordable fees and better work conditions to help with the massive shortage of child care workers. It is crucial that Ontario sign on to the $10/day deal with the federal government and prioritize children, families, and child care workers.
Since 2020, Toronto’s waitlist for child care subsidies ballooned to 17,880 children, an increase of 26.23% from the previous year.
Without signing onto this deal, the City will not reach its target of having affordable child care spaces for 40% of children by 2026. As fewer parents will be able to access child care, the gap between the haves and have-nots will continue to grow at increasingly high rates.
Toronto City Council will be voting on a motion to negotiate a deal directly with the federal government if Ford does not sign the deal. Send a message telling your City Councillor and the Mayor to commit to ensuring Torontonians get access to $10/day child care.
Child care in Toronto needs to be more affordable
Together with the Toronto Community for Better Child Care, we call on both the Provincial and Municipal governments to ensure:
More affordable child care fees for families at $10-a-day;
Decent work and compensation for Early Childhood Educators and child care workers; and
The expansion of quality public and non-profit child care spaces to ensure access to all families who need it.
There is more than $10 billion of child care funding on the line; take action now and get the child care agreement signed. If Ford, your MPP, the Mayor and Councillors hear from thousands of Torontonians demanding a $10/day child care, we can win.
