Field Trip: Let’s Show Them What Democracy Looks Like

Toronto City Council is meeting Thursday at 12pm. Let’s fill the council chambers while they meet. Sign up:

After the historic election of new and diverse progressive voices to city hall, Mayor John Tory is working closely with Doug Ford to pass a disturbingly undemocratic power grab that allows the Mayor to win votes with the support of only a third of city councillors. Meaning that a large majority of city councillors could oppose the Mayor and his motions would still pass. Learn more and take action here.

City councillors and Mayor Tory meet on Thursday, November 24 at 12pm. This is the first city council meeting of the new term that the public can attend. Let’s fill the city council chambers and show the mayor and councillors what democracy looks like! Sign up to join us at noon and stand up for our city.

City Hall belongs to the people and this undemocratic move to remove voting power from elected city councillors further removes us, the people, from the decision making process. Help fill city council chambers and show the mayor what democracy looks like.

What’s the process of going into City Hall?

The City Council Chambers, where Councillors and the Mayor will meet, is open to the public during City Council Meetings - that means it is your right to attend this meeting. Prior to entering City Hall, you will have to go through a security gate. This is a relatively new feature that Mayor Tory brought in.

Upon arrival, security staff ask visitors to place items, including cell phones, cameras, keys and sunglass cases into the trays provided and pass through the metal detector one person at a time. If an alarm is triggered, you will be asked to walk through again or will be screened with a hand-held wand. Learn more about the City Hall security process here.
