The conversation will be moderated by Brittany Andrew-Amofah (bio), Senior Policy Analyst at the Broadbent Institute.

David Miller:

David Miller is the Director of International Diplomacy and Global Ambassador of Inclusive Climate Action at C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. He is responsible for supporting Mayors in their climate leadership and for building a global movement for socially equitable action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. He served as Chair of C40 Cities from 2008 until 2010.

Miller was Mayor of Toronto from 2003 to 2010. Under his leadership, Toronto became widely admired internationally for its environmental leadership, economic strength and social integration. He is a leading advocate for the creation of sustainable urban economies, and a strong and forceful champion for the next generation of jobs through sustainability. Miller has held a variety of public and private positions and served as Future of Cities Global Fellow at Polytechnic Institute of New York University from 2011 to 2014.

David Miller is a Harvard trained economist and professionally a lawyer.

MP Matthew Green

In 2019 Matthew Green was elected the Member of Parliament for Hamilton Centre. He previously made history when he became the first person of colour elected to Hamilton City Council in 2014. During his time as Ward 3 Councillor, Matthew’s policy initiatives focused on ecological, equity, and economic justice issues.

Matthew has a Political Science and Legal Studies degree from Acadia University and continued his education at McMaster University as well as the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Business School. 

Prior to being elected to city council Matthew owned a small business in Hamilton and most recently, served as the Executive Director of the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion. 

Matthew is the NDP Critic for National Revenue, Public Services and Procurement, Treasury Board, Deputy Critic for Ethics.

Matthew is committed to ensuring the real working-class values of Hamilton continue to be represented in Ottawa. He’s standing with Jagmeet Singh and the NDP to fight for universal pharmacare, affordable housing, and urgent action for the environment.

Chiara Padovani

Chiara Padovani is a social worker at North York Harvest Food Bank and founding member of the York South-Weston Tenant Union. She has worked with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing and helped launch The Shift - a global movement to shift housing from a commodity to a human right.

Like so many others she has fought for $15 and Fairness, better public transit and flooding prevention in her community. Chiara’s vision of meaningful policy change has always been informed by her years of experience on the frontlines. It's why she ran for York South-Weston City Councillor in 2018 and why she plans to run again in 2022. She lives in Weston with her husband, Bruno and their cat, Mishi.

Moderator: Brittany Andrew-Amofah

Brittany is a public policy professional based in Toronto. She is currently the Senior Policy and Research Analyst at the Broadbent Institute, where she is responsible for assisting with setting the research and policy direction of the organization, and managing the Broadbent Institute’s Fellow Program. Brittany is regularly sought out to provide research, analysis and commentary on pressing policy and political issues. 

Since graduating with a Master’s in Political Management from Carleton University, prior to joining the Broadbent Institute, Brittany was on the policy team at the Maytree Foundation where her work focused on researching various poverty reduction strategies. She is also a former Program Manager at Harmony Movement, where she delivered diversity, equity and anti-racism training to students, educators and non-profits across Ontario; a constituency assistant to Councillor Janet Davis and has worked many years in Toronto's homelessness and housing sector.
