How to Speak at a Government Committee
The cost of living is ever-increasing in Toronto. Thousands are living in precarity and are experiencing homelessness. Advocates, like Shelter and Housing Justice Network, have been calling for more supports for unhoused communities to help meet people’s needs.
Many committees are meeting this month and shelter supports are on the agenda. There are many opportunities for the public to speak to greater investments and action on shelters and homelessness. You can do this by registering to speak at a committee.
To “speak at a committee” is also known as making a deputation. Deputations are an opportunity for you to tell government officials your opinions and experiences on issues they are considering.
On Monday, January 9 at 7pm Progress Toronto’s Organizing Director Saman Tabasinejad will be leading our How to Speak at a Government Committee training. Join to learn how to depute!
At this workshop you will learn the basics of making a deputation. You will learn how to choose which committee to speak at, how to read the committee agenda, how to sign up for a deputation, and how to prepare your deputation (speech). Right now, deputations at the City of Toronto are taking place by video. We will also review how this works and how you can prepare.
